Computer Assisted Writing

A lot of methods and ways have been introduce just to make sure teaching process become more success, effective and more attractive. Online teaching or computer writing is one of the most popular and latest way that currently using in teaching methods. It’s also can be known as computer assisted writing. It is well known and argued that online teaching can make improvement to the student’s personal learning styles. Many research shows that these option were increasingly growth in order to realizing educational objectives. As a tool for practice in writing, the word processor’s usefulness is unparalleled. Writing researchers have long advised that the key to fluent writing is to write as much as possible. The key to exact writing is to revise repeatedly.Teachers can get around the typical problem of too few computers in the classroom by having children write on paper first. Then at the word processor, students can “fine-tune” their papers. Concepts presented in the first draft can be examined for clarity and sufficient elaboration. Additional information can be added, if necessary, to make ideas more concrete. Finally, the text can be checked for minor errors and punctuation.

Educational computing has undergone a change of focus regarding how the microcomputer should be used in language arts, and especially in writing. No longer are computers seen as tutors and drillers. Instead, educators now are realizing that the computer is a tool for handling information. A word processor can become the centerpiece for an effective writing curriculum, encouraging early language production and providing students with opportunities to connect reading and writing. When integrating advanced technology into any curriculum, the teacher must always be aware that it cannot “eliminate” problems. But with instruction and support from the teacher and peers, most students can experience success in writing through the use of a word processor.

Among the most popular tools that had been use nowadays in online teaching to get computer assisted writing were:

  • Bulletin Board
  • Online Chat Room
  • Computer Conferencing
  • Electronic Mail

Bulletin Board
A Bulletin board system, or BBS, is a computer system running software that allows users to dial into the system over a phone line (or Telnet) and, using a terminal program, perform functions such as downloading software and data, uploading data, reading news, and exchanging messages with other users with all over the world. The term BBS currently may also be used to refer to any online forum or message board.Bulletin board systems were in many ways a precursor to the modern form of the World Wide Web and other aspects of the internet. BBSes were a highly social phenomenon and were used for meeting people and having discussions in message board as well as for publishing articles, downloading software, playing games and many more things using a single application.

The BBS was also a local phenomenon, as one had to dial into a BBS with a phone line and would have to pay additional long distance charges for a BBS out of the local area, as opposed to less expensive local charges. Thus, many users of a given BBS usually lived in the same area, and activities such as BBS Meets or Get Togethers (GTs or GTGs), where everyone from the board would gather and meet face to face (F2F), were common. As the use of the Internet became more widespread. The first public bulletin board system was developed by Ward Christensen. According to an early interview, while he was snowed in during the Great Blizzard of 1978 in Chicago, Christensen began preliminary work on the computerized bulletin board system, or CBBS.

With the rise of the world wide web around 1996, BBSes rapidly declined in popularity in the Western world, and were replaced by systems using the internet for connectivity, rather than direct phone lines. This reduced costs for heavy users immensely, as they could now pay only for an account at a local dial up ISP and the local call phone charge, rather than a potential long distance call to a faraway BBS.

One particular notoriety associating BBS with abuse is child phornography, which popularized in trade on BBS networks in secrecy-dependent organizations specifically designed to receive and send illegal graphic images and primitive video capture clips. Before the Internet became widespread in popularity, certain jurisdictions in Western hemisphere amended child pornography law to criminalize abuse of BBSes for distribution of illicit materials . July 3, 1995 issue of Time Magazine in particular demonized Internet pornography by impliedly lambasting the use of BBS for the unregulated distribution of hard-core pornography of varying fetishes, legal and illegal , which led to the U.S. Congress’ formation of Communication Decency Act legislation in the federal attempt to regulate the objective content on the fledging Internet.

These are the example url that can be use to bulletin board:

Online Chat Room
Online chat is a way of communicating by sending text messages to people in the same chat-room in real-time. The oldest form of true chat rooms are the text-based variety. Freelancin’_Roundtable was a modem-based text chat system in the 1980s. The most popular of this kind is Internet Relay Chat (IRC). However, there are also talkers and havens. The popularity of these kinds of chat rooms has waned over the years, and IRC’s popularity has rapidly given way to instant messaging. There are also graphical user interface (GUI) text-based chat rooms which allow users to select an identifying icon and modify the look of their chat environment. Some visual chat rooms also incorporate audio and video communications, so that users may actually see and hear each other. However, some find these types of environments cumbersome to use and actually an impediment to chatting. The primary use of a chat room is to share information via text with a group of other users. New technology has enabled the use of file sharing and webcams to be included in some programs and almost all Internet chat or messaging services allow users to display or send to each other photos of themselves.

Some of the url for the caht room were:

Computer Conferencing
In telecommunication, the term computer conferencing has the following meanings:

1. Teleconferencing supported by one or more computers.

2. An arrangement in which access, by multiple users, to a common database is mediated by a controlling computer.

3. The interconnection of two or more computers working in a distributed manner on a common application process. Instant messaging and chat systems are multicasting approaches for computer conferencing.

4. teleconference is the live exchange and mass articulation of information among persons and machines remote from one another but linked by a telecommunications system, usually over the phone line.

5. The telecommunications system may support the teleconference by providing one or more of the following audio, video, and/or data services by one or more means, such as telephone, telegraph, teletype, radio, and television.

6. Teleconferences are also referred to as teleseminars.

7. Internet telephony involves conducting a teleconference over the Internet or a Wide Area Network. One key technology in this area is Voice over Internet Protocol (VOIP). Popular software for personal use includes Skype, Google Talk, Windows Live Messenger and Yahoo Messenger. A List of commercial voice over IP network providers is available..

In telecommunications, interconnection is the physical linking of a carrier’s network with equipment or facilities not belonging to that network. The term may refer to a connection between a carrier’s facilities and the equipment belonging to its customer, or to a connection between two (or more) carriers.

Electronic Mail
ElectronicMail
is a managed assembly that can send and retrieve email. John Daintith told that electronic mail (e-mail or email) Messages sent between users of computer systems, the computer systems being used to hold and transport messages. Sender and receiver(s) need not be online at the same time, or even on the same continent, to communicate. Messages can be sent with file attachments, providing a way of exchanging files with other users. Electronic mail is an important component of an office automation system.

The originator of a message creates a specially formatted message file by running a mail-sending program. The message may often be entered and modified using the general-purpose editor of the user’s choice. When the message is complete, it is posted to a message.

    Hi Sarrah,

Your 2nd posting on CAW is fine. But, I don’t seem to find any activities regarding CAW. I do hope you did try out the activities.

Also, the urls for the chat room are not clearly seen. I’m not able to read them mainly because of the background color theme that you used!

So, in future I do hope you will use a different color background.

    Regards.
